HHQ (HELP HER QUIT) project
The project is implemented by IASO (www.iaso.gr), Institute of life (www.iolife.eu) and sponsored by PMI Science (www.pmiscience.com). It represents a strategic partnership aiming to build Doctor’ s and hospital staff capacities in knowledge of smoking harmfulness and learn methods to help women in ceasing smoking.
For your information a brief description of the proposal is in the following:
Proposal title: Smoking cessation in women: Create the strategy at IASO
Proposal acronym: HHQ (Help Her Quit)
Milestones of the proposal include:
- Mapping the level of awareness and capacities of OBGYNs in tobacco and women’s health
- Educating and informing OBGYNs in women’s health and tobacco risks
- Developing a toolkit for MD-OBGYNs on women’s health/fertility/cancer and smoking including smoking cessation guidelines
- Developing a leaflet for the public on women’s health
- Building OBGYNs/ midwives/nurses capacities to help women in smoking cessation
In brief, deliverables of the project will be as follows:
- Three workshops/training sessions (including kick-off meeting, coming up end of November)
- Toolkit and leaflet, for OBGYNs and the public respectively
- Dissemination at all steps of the proposal, multiplying thus the visibility of HHQ (IASO newsletter, Blue magazine newsletter, twitter, linkedin, sites, etc)
- At the end of the project at least 50 OBGYNs and midwives will be competent in HHQ
- At the end of project at least 50 MDs/midwives will be nominated HHQ Ambassadors (Smoking cessation Ambassadors)
- At the end of the project guidelines, and materials will be disseminated to association of OBGYNs, of midwives, of women and to the authorities

Associate Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology at the Medical School of the University of Athens.
He graduated from the Medical School of the University of Athens and he completed his residency in the 2nd Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the University of Athens in Aretaieio Hospital.
In 1977, he was appointed at the University of Athens and since then:
He was promoted to all grades of University hierarchy, Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor.
In 2001, he resigned from his position, 15 years prior to his retirement, so he would be able to dedicate his time completely to the very successful IVF Program which he managed.
From 1981 until 1984, he specialized in Assisted Reproduction at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk Virginia, USA under the supervision of Professors Howard Jones and his wife Georgeanna Jones, who held the position of professors in Gynecology and Gynecologic Endocrinology, respectively, for 25 years at John Hopkins University in Baltimore.
There he was honored and privileged to be part of the team, under Howard Jones, that achieved the first IVF pregnancy and delivered the first IVF baby, Elizabeth Carr, in the USA.
In 1986, he founded the IVF Unit in “Mitera” Maternity Hospital. The first child from this program was born in 1987. In 1988, the first child was born in Greece with the use of a donor egg from a mother with premature menopause.
In 1987, the first donor egg baby in Greece was born by his programme.
In 1989, he established the IVF Unit Euromedica.
In 1997, he was the founder as well as the director of the IVF Unit in Aretaieio Hospital.
In 2001, after reaching the pivotal point of 2000 births occurring from the IVF program, he was awarded the Gold Metal of the City of Athens from the city’s Mayor for his contribution to Science and Humanity.
In 2008 he was the co-founder of “Embryoland” IVF Center.
In 2004 he was elected President of the Hellenic Society of Physicians of Assisted Reproduction, a position he still holds.
In 2006, he became a member of the Greek Independent National Committee for Assisted Reproduction, until 2010.
In 2007, he was elected member of the Board of Directors of Jones Institute Foundation in Reproductive Medicine, a position he still holds.
As a result of his research, Prof. T. Mantzavinos and his collaborators have published and presented 360 scientific papers in International and Greek Journals as well as International and Greek Medical Conferences.
The result of all of the years of his Clinical activity in Reproduction is the birth of more than 6,000 children.
Some of his first IVF babies have already become parents by natural conception.
Since 01/01/2016 he is the scientific director of “Institute of Life” IVF Center in Iaso Maternity Hospital.

IASO
IASO and the Institute of Life (IOL), are in leading position in women’s health services, in Greece and in Europe, with, more than 8000 deliveries/year, 3000 assisted reproduction cycles/year, an enormous laparoscopy and robotic surgery treatment cases, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Several clinical studies and trials are accomplished within our premises under excellent quality standards and committee bioethical approval. More specifically, IOL was launched in 2015 and operates as one of the best assisted reproduction units in Europe. To start up the embryology laboratory, IOL, invited European renown experts and built a prototype laboratory. We created bridges for technology transfer with the reputed Embryo Tool laboratory (Spain). Among achievements of IOL figures the “three-parent baby” and among first line goals is the spindle transfer.
The newly established department IASO MEDICAL RESEARCH (IMR), aims to create a Center of Excellence for Women’s health” which is hosted within IASO. Among the goals of IMR figures out the strategy for smoking cessation in women.
